Donald Trump promised throughout his entire campaign to seek vengeance and retribution on those who he claimed wronged him. This largely came during his cries of “political persecution” at the hands of his 88 felony charges, as he promised to turn the Department of Justice against Democrats.
This is why, once he won the election, attention turned to who Trump would pick for pivotal positions like Attorney General or FBI Director. If he did intend to go after political enemies it would be these positions he relied on.
Which is something that he has a history of attempting, though albeit failing, in his investigations into Hilary Clinton.
Which is why when Trump selected Matt Gaetz for Attorney General, the world stopped spinning. This was the exact sort of partisan pick that stood to symbolize Trump was going to make good on that campaign promise of vengeance.
Only for it to not pan out how Trump wanted, as after reports of statutory rape and drug use came out, Gaetz quickly withdrew from the running.
This left Trump needing a selection, and who better to fit the bill than Pam Bondi. A former Florida Attorney General who he had already successfully bribed into not investigating him before, of which then went on to push 2020 election fraud claims even after 60 court cases found no merit to the claims. Perfect.
These kinds of conflicts of interest, lapses of character judgment, possibly illegal actions of course called into question how “confirmable” she might be in the Senate.
So, with this kind of pressure heading into her hearing, lets breakdown some of the most notable moments and answers to better get a picture of the person Trump selected to lead our Justice Department.
One basic principle of someone leading the Justice Department, is probably that they believe in it as a system and do not want to undermine it. Which is why Adam Schiff started his questioning by asking Bondi if she could admit Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. She couldn’t.
He then asked her if there was any massive voter fraud in 2020, she refused to say there wasn’t. This is significant because over 60 court cases were heard on this, of these 33 were decided on evidentiary grounds that’s the evidence wasn’t suffice enough to meet the claim.
Of the 27 decided on standing, in all but 3 the courts looked into the evidence and deemed there was no merit to the claims. Of the 3 they didn't, in 2 it was states trying to sue other states where the courts ruled it had to be someone inside the state to bring the lawsuit. In both cases someone inside those states then brought the case, and they lost on evidentiary grounds.
The last case was someone suing Mike Pence for not unilaterally overthrowing the election, which was thrown out on the grounds of being frivolous. The final verdict was a minor Trump win in Pennsylvania about how votes will be counted in future elections, but not one that found any fraud.
Despite what these courts found, Pam Bondi was willing to undermine this on the campaign trail to help Donald Trumps election chances. She now will be the head of the courts and it was shown in Adam Schiff’s questioning she has no remorse about it.
This was only further highlighted when Senator Masie Hirono also questioned Bondi on if she though Joe Biden won in 2020, Bondi refused to answer. She then asked if she disagreed with Trump that those arrested on Jan 6th were hostages, Bondi refused to disagree.
She then stated she would not advise Trump to not pardon violent offenders on Jan 6th. Yes, you read that right. Violent offenders, those who broke down barricades or doors, attacked police officers, Bondi sees no issue with Trump pardoning these people.
One of the most crucial moments however, was her inability to comment on birthright citizenship. Stating the need to “study” the 14th amendment. The outright inability to state they will stand by the constitution over party is alarming to say the least.
So what we got from this hearing is our next Attorney General could be an election denier, who believes pardoning Jan 6th rioters who were violent is acceptable, won’t deny the possibility of probing into political enemies, has shown willingness to end investigations if paid off in the past, and can’t even state she’d stick by the constitution.
This is exactly what Trump wanted, what MAGA voted for. It’s the destruction of our democracy, the erosion of the American experiment. They don’t want to end liberals, they want to end liberalism, and replace it with rampant corporate-level fascism.
Pam Bondi, was a cheap buy. 25,000$ to not help students get refund from Trumps scam in Florida???
I woulda asked for like 25,000$ for EACH student deceived at least.
Anyways, sorry for my rant.
Great article.
